Kate Pulsford redefines coastal living

Kate Pulsford of Villa Interiors has redefined coastal living through a ‘holistic redesign’ of this Coogee home. The goal, to flow with the natural rhythms of a ‘busy, modern family.’

SNB Stone’s Venus Grey Dolomite ‘became the foundation of the scheme.’

When Kate first met this family of seven, they were excited to finally be settling into their new home in Coogee, land traditionally known by the Bidjigal and Gadigal peoples of Eora as ‘Koojah’.

The space was large enough, but ‘the interiors felt dated.’ Opening up the floorplan allowed for seamless transitioning between the kitchen, dining and living areas, supported by the sturdiness of Venus Grey for the main finishings.

‘Rethinking the heart of this home,’ as Pulsford describes, involved tactile, visual and spatial cohesion. Venus Grey was a choice that complimented the preexisting tumbled limestone floors with its ‘soft grey-blue undertone’ across the spacious kitchen benches and island. The construction of wall-to-wall cabinetry above the induction stove and washing up area, as well as a buffet-style area at the kitchen’s entrance, all provide the functionality that this family requires. The cool serenity of the natural stone balanced by the timber is a ‘subtle nod to the home’s coastal setting, without leaning into the obvious “beach house” aesthetic.’

Extending to the living room, SNB Stone’s Venus Grey has been applied as a ‘quiet yet striking statement on the fireplace.’ The warm leather cushion complements the natural stone feature.

The art in this home lies not only in its design but through a curation of works by ‘Katrina O’Brien (a striking red work), Belinda Street ( a soft painting in the kitchen), and Theresa Hunt (an oceanic, deeply-toned painting in the casual dining area).’ Each in energetic conversation with features throughout the space. A sandy timber dining table ties in the framery, cabinetry and floating shelving while coastal rays are diffused by ceiling-length cream drapery.

‘In this home, the stone truly set the tone’

—describes Kate Pulsford on why Villa Interiors chose SNB Stone.

‘From Quartzites and Granites to Dolomites, there are endless options to explore—each offering durability, character, and a unique sense of luxury. For families, this is especially important: clients want surfaces that can handle life’s everyday messes while still elevating the space.’

With SNB, you will ‘find materials that not only perform but also enhance the overall design vision…Bringing texture, strength, and timeless beauty to a space that now feels both practical and deeply personal.’Venus Grey Dolomite is a lively surface with varying shades of cream and charcoal, resisting dullness and supporting the elegant yet inviting approach that Kate Pulsford took in her redesign. ‘The continuity of material’ and open-plan style ‘ties the space together beautifully, balancing muted greys, inky blues, timber, and limestone to achieve a soft, layered palette that reflects both the location and the family who call this house home.’
